Christmas decorations are already up in Sonya Bateson's house.

It's December 1 and I couldn't be happier.

I'm one of those people who, even though I'm in my late 20s, still count down the days until Christmas (and until my birthday, but that's another story).

I set up my Christmas tree two weeks ago (December was too far away) and the number of fairy lights in my house could probably illuminate a small town.

There are already presents under the tree.

Nothing brings me more joy than choosing, making and buying presents for the people who mean most to me in this world - and I don't mind receiving them either!

This year, I'm embarking on quite the DIY project for someone with my limited woodcraft experience. I know it won't be perfect, but I also know the recipients will love it all the more for that reason.

Giving is such a joyful thing to be doing at any time of year, but particularly in the season of love and togetherness.

It's a time where we try to think more of others than ourselves.

Charities are buzzing hives of activity at this time of year, both in receiving donations and in distributing them to the less fortunate in our community.

It's the reason the malls and shopping centres are so busy in December - hordes of people hit the streets in search of the perfect gift to show their loved ones how much they mean.

Then on Christmas Day, families and friends get together and exchange gifts.

We catch up with those we haven't seen in weeks, months or even years, eat lots of good food, maybe drink a few good drinks, read some ridiculously lame but still funny cracker jokes, and just bask in being together.

It's my favourite time of year and I can't wait! Twenty-four days to go.
