I can understand why Prime Minister Bill English has decided not to go to Te Tii Marae for Waitangi Day celebrations.
Mr English has been criticised for the decision, with kaumatua Kingi Taurua accusing him of being a "a spoilt child" who has chosen to "run away".
Mr English cites concerns over speaking rights and a perceived lack of respect. In my view, these concerns are valid.
The marae offered a stage outside for the Prime Minister to "engage with Ngapuhi, address the nation and talk politics freely and uninhibited, if he so wishes" after the powhiri was held.
Perhaps the marae hoped the move would reduce the focus on political matters during the commemorations but the decision to deny the Prime Minister of the country the right to speak on the marae, in my view, fails to recognise the importance of the role.
