One person has been taken to hospital following a two-car collision near Paengaroa this afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Ian Campion, head of Western Bay road policing, said police received a report at 3.08pm of a two-car collision at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Wilson Rd.

Fire Service Northern Communications shift manager Carren Larking said firefighters found one person "lightly trapped" in a vehicle.

They freed the person, who was treated by ambulance staff at the scene, then taken to Tauranga Hospital.

She said fire crews from Maketu and Te Puke were sent to the crash, and cleared debris from the road.
