Iconic 1970s Maori singer Bunny Walters has died.
Bunny Tekokiri Miha Wahi Walters passed away at Waikato Hospital this morning after a short illness. Maori Television reported Walters passed away while surrounded by his partner Anne, his children and family.
Walters, of Ngai Te Rangi descent, was 63-years-old. He was born and raised in Katikati.
Walters was best known for his hits Nearest thing to Heaven, Take the Money and Run and Brandy.
His first single Just out of Reach was released in 1969, following by Brandy which reached number four on the New Zealand charts and Take the Money reached number two.
Walters' body is expected to be taken to Rereatukahia marae in Katikati tonight.
