There is no tsunami threat to the Bay of Plenty following a severe earthquake off the East Cape this morning.
A ''severe'' 6.6 magnitude quake struck 100kms east of Te Araroa at 11.33am, at a depth of 92km, and was felt throughout the Bay.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) issued a Tsunami Information Statement in response to the earthquake, stating ''Based on current information, the initial assessment is that the earthquake is unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will pose a threat to New Zealand''.
Geonet New Zealand recorded dozens of reports of the quake from the Western Bay of Plenty, with most people reporting the quake as moderate or light.
Reports of strong and damaging were reported from the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
