A popular reserve for private car sales is now off limits after a complaint to Western Bay Council highlighted safety concerns.
According to the council, the Reserves Act of 1977 prohibits selling a vehicle on a council reserve.
When Katikati Community Board member Brendan Gibbs said locals had parked their cars at the Earl Drive Reserve for many years - and he didn't see any harm or hazard.
"I think the law can be a pain sometimes but the council is doing what it thinks is right."
Wayne Alchorne, parks and reserves officer for the council, said staff had acted after a recent complaint.
"There are safety issues with vehicles parked on the reserve for sale. People pull in and out of the reserve, pull off the highway and out of Earl Drive to view them. It slows traffic, which is also navigating the fuel station opposite," he said.
Mr Alchorne said the council was trying to gently remind people that vehicles cannot park at the site.
No more car sales on reserve
