A new 30km/h speed limit takes effect in Tauranga's CBD area today.
Tauranga City Council introduced the slower speed limit to make the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists. The new limit also comes as several construction projects are underway in the area.
The changes apply between 1at Ave and McLean St and between Cameron Rd and the waterfront. The speed limit on Cameron Rd will remain 50km/h.
Brian Berry, of Downtown Tauranga, said earlier this month that most cars "I would think, probably aren't really travelling at much different speed to that when they're moving around downtown".
