The 56th National Jazz Festival in Tauranga has begun.
Tauranga City councillor Leanne Brown opened the festival on behalf of Mayor Greg Brownless at Baycourt Community and Arts Centre this afternoon.
Brown said the festival, which will finish on Easter Monday, was a flagship event and a huge part of the city's history.
"There has been an even greater awareness of the festival this year and having three events already sold out is evidence of this," she said.
The festival is the longest running of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. This year 250 musicians, including local and international stars, will perform across six days of events, including a carnival and Hurricane Party.
