UPDATED 12:10pm: A 32-year-old Papamoa man has been charged with murder following a hit and run incident in Welcome Bay Rd overnight.
The man will be appearing in the Tauranga District Court later today.
Police have identified the victim as a 33-year-old man from Parkvale, Tauranga. Police will not be releasing his name until all his family have been notified, some of whom are overseas.
Police have recovered a black Subaru motor vehicle which they believe was involved in the incident, from an address in Papamoa.
A forensic team is currently at the address examining the vehicle.
Police are still seeking witnesses to the incident on Welcome Bay Road and would also like to speak to anyone who saw a black Subaru motor vehicle between 8.00 p.m, and midnight last night in the Mt Maunganui, Papamoa or Welcome Bay areas.

Police will be making no further comment at this time, the matter is now before the court.
UPDATED 9am: The man who died after being struck by a vehicle in Welcome Bay overnight was in his 30s, St John territory manager Ross Clarke has confirmed.
8.13am: Welcome Bay Rd has now re-opened after a man died after being struck by a car on the road overnight.
EARLIER: A man has died after being struck by a car on Welcome Bay Road overnight.
The road has been closed between James Cook Drive and Kaitemako Rd.
In a statement, Inspector Clifford Paxton said police were notified of the crash at 11pm.
A black Subaru motor vehicle had struck a pedestrian and died as a result of injuries received.
The vehicle left the scene but was subsequently located.
Police were speaking to several people in connection with the vehicle.
Welcome Bay Road remains closed between James Cook Drive and Kaitemako Road whilst a crime scene examination takes place.
Diversions are currently in place which will stop vehicles being able to travel along Welcolme Bay Road between James Cook Drive and Kaitemako Road.
Western Bay of Plenty police are seeking any witnesses who may have seen this incident or the vehicle travelling in the Tauranga area during the evening of Monday the 2nd of February 2015.
