Mr Melgren was trialling the two new events because they needed to walk before they ran, with the Gourmet BBQ Championships for high-end cooks first up on June 27.
The competition would be held in two sections: the longer charcoal division and the two-hour gas barbecue contest.
Mainstreet saw a huge potential for the championships, with add-one events like cooking demonstrations or a dinner for people to enjoy high quality barbecue food with matching beer and wines.
The idea for the other new event was hatched by Mr Melgren and given the working title of Mountopoly the Brain Battle. "It will make the Amazing Race look one dimensional."
The two-day "urban adventure" would be fought out initially among 20 teams, but he predicted numbers could reach 100 if everything went according to plan.
The event will start and end at Phoenix carpark and involve five special arenas around the city with four activities in each arena that needed brain power, strength, endurance and team work. "It needs a well-balanced multi-skilled team."
Teams received their playing board setting out most of the activities a week prior to the event because strategies and good planning were essential to success.
The Mount Garage Sale will evolve into the Great Deal Day in which retailers from elsewhere in Tauranga will be invited to join Mount retailers in setting up stalls in which old stock can be converted into cash. "It's nothing like a flea market."
Mainstreet will rebrand the Busking Festival to give it a modern younger feel by having the busking in the morning and the judging of the top 10 acts at a concert in the afternoon.
"It will be aligned more with what people see on TV, along the lines of the X Factor," he said.
Mount Mainstreet's winter timetable:
June 27: New Zealand Gourmet BBQ Championships
Late July: Mount Great Deal Day
August 28-29: Mountopoly the Brain Battle
September 6: Father's Day Vintage Car Display
October 4: The Mount Factor (in partnership with Mauao Performing Arts Centre)
October 25: Wheels on Mainstreet
Mr Melgren said it would be condensed into categories up to the age of 25, which was where most of the interest was. The concert would be held on the carpark stage.
The scope of Wheels on Mainstreet would be broadened to create more interest, such as displays showing the skills of restorers taking cars back to their original condition.
These cars could sit alongside highly modified hot-rod versions of the same vehicle.
Mr Melgren said the only event that was not planned to change was the Father's Day Vintage Car Display.
