In spite of hitting the dirt twice in five races, reigning national motocross champion Cody Cooper (Papamoa) raced to the premier MX1 title at the 2015 edition of the annual holiday season Honda Summercross on Monday.
But taking two spills made it hard work chasing down motocross success at the Awakaponga track with Cooper (Honda CRF 450) needing a fast-paced fightback ride in the final moto to edge out 2014 champ Rhys Carter (Mt Maunganui) by just two points. The day began with some smooth and fast conditions and Cooper won both of the back-to-back 10-minute opening motos, chased by veteran Josh Coppins (Yamaha).
The second brace of sprints delivered wins for Suzuki riders Brad Groombridge (Taupo) and Carter, while Cooper had an early spill in race three and recovered to third before chasing home Carter in heat four.
Cooper went into the final race of 15 minutes plus two laps duration holding a handy 14 point lead over Carter. But when Cooper looked to pass Carter for the lead on the opening lap the pair touched and Cooper was on the ground for the second time.
"I couldn't start the bike for a while until I found neutral again."
