Papamoa's Cody Cooper has fought off a strong Australian challenge to extend his reign at the top of New Zealand motocross.
The 32-year-old Honda racer clinched his fourth consecutive national title - and his fifth in six years - at Taupo on Sunday, beating Australian Dean Ferris (Yamaha) to the MX1 (450cc) crown by just two points as the pair traded wins and some paint work at the finale.
Cooper had to fight back from second round struggles last month to clinch the title. He powered to the lead of the championship the previous weekend at Rotorua to hold a three-point margin over Suzuki's Australian rider Todd Waters and five points over Ferris going into the finale at Taupo's Digger McEwen MX Park.
"I mucked it up at the second round. I trained too hard beforehand and I was buggered. I didn't ride very well," said Cooper.
"Luckily at Rotorua I was able to get back into the fight."
