Most of the base track on Mauao has reopened after closing last week due to slips and storm surges.
The base track was now accessible from the Mount Maunganui beach side of the mountain. However, the Pilot Bay end of the track - where the biggest slip occurred - remains closed.
Tauranga City Council staff would be monitoring potential further damage from the heavy rainfall expected to hammer the Bay today and tomorrow.
Staff were working on options to create a temporary bypass around the section of track that collapsed.
The bypass would create access for walkers and runners only.
