Tauranga will get more seats and lower fares from Air New Zealand's $568 million decision to buy 15 new planes for its regional services.
Yesterday's announcement by the national carrier was welcomed by Tauranga's deputy mayor Kelvin Clout who said it would be a big boost for Bay travellers and lift domestic and overseas tourism.
The additional 15 ATR72-600 planes worth more than half a billion dollars will begin arriving late 2016, joining the 14 other ATR72-600s that will finish being delivered by the middle of next year.
Air New Zealand's decision to ratchet up competition in the regions comes just three weeks before rival Jetstar starts its regional services.
And although Jetstar has bypassed Tauranga, Mr Clout said it was a good strategic move by Air New Zealand to provide more seats and lower fares for its Tauranga services.
