The Merivale community where Lance Scullin lived are in shock following his death, as police continue to investigate the incident.
Merivale Community Centre services manager John Fletcher was a long time Merivale resident and was a key part of the residents' group.
"It's just a bit of a shock. There's been a lot of people through the centre this morning wanting to talk about what's been going on," he said, "It's shock at first. He was an active member of the community."
Mr Scullin kept an eye on what was going on in the community and often challenged people who were causing trouble, Mr Fletcher said.
"He was like our unofficial security guard."
Mr Fletcher said the centre encouraged people to make a positive difference in their street and he did just that.
"A lot of people in the community will challenge bad behaviour," he said.
Police want to hear from anyone in the area last night or this morning who
has any information that may assist with this investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300.
Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation
Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
