Three trees at Memorial Park will be cut down this week.
The trees, located behind the pump station, would be felled as part of the work on the Southern Pipeline harbour crossing construction.
Funds set aside for compensation planting as a result of the removal would be donated to other tree projects in the city.
City council project manager Steve Wiggill said removing the trees was a last resort.
"We usually undertake compensation planting in the same location.
