A large piece of material that washed up at Omanu Beach this afternoon will be assessed to discover if it was part of the artificial surf reef at Mount Maunganui.
In a statement, Bay of Plenty Regional Council said it was notified by Tauranga City Council that a large piece of geotextile material had washed ashore in Omanu.

Regional Council Pollution Prevention staff were currently assessing the material to identify if it was part of the reef. If confirmed, further assessment of the current condition of the surf reef would take place, the statement said.
The geotextile material looked similar to carpet and the Regional Council said it would like to hear from anyone who had observed any of this material on the shore.
