A Maori adze that was dug up more than 60 years ago has been given to the Ngai Tamarawaho hapu and will be displayed at Huria Marae.
Hapu spokesman Buddy Mikaere said the artefact was found by the Tollemache family who used to have a dairy farm and piggery in Tauranga.
John Tollemache said his late father, Saxon, had been digging a hole for pig waste on old Waihi Rd near the cheese factory when he discovered the adze.
''It was on the edge of the swamp that came down from the Gate Pa swamp.''
John said the adze had spent decades in Auckland after they moved out of the region but after attending the 2014 Gate Pa commemoration, he decided to gift it back.
