Man jumps from moving car

A man suffered facial injuries after jumping from a moving car during an argument with his family.

The 36-year-old man leaped from the car travelling about 70km/h on Maunganui Road, near the flyover around 9.30pm last night.

He had been travelling with his partner and his young children.

Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier said the man was lucky he didn't suffer more serious injuries.

"It's lucky the road was wet and slippery or the injuries could have been worse. He suffered superficial injuries to his face and hands," he said.

It is understood the man exited the car from the passenger seat to escape an argument.

"It would appear that, as a result of a domestic argument ... the male has jumped out. Needless to say, the circumstances have been referred to health services," Mr Brazier said.

Police and ambulances were called to the scene.

St John Tauranga staff said it was initially unclear whether the man had been walking and been hit by the car.
