Living the Lotto dream - 'What would you do?'

Forget buying a flash car or even an island.

Most Kiwis would use tomorrow night's $40 million Powerball jackpot to pay off debt.

That's the most popular of 10 options in an unscientific poll running on nzherald.co.nz and bayofplentytimes.co.nz today.

Almost 14,500 people had voted by 2.15pm.

In Tauranga, queues were stretching out the door of most Lotto outlets including Greerton Lucky Lotto.

And 36 per cent say they would pay off debt.

Sixteen per cent said they would help their family and 15 per cent would quit their job, and 15 per cent buy a house.

Just 2 per cent would buy a flash car and 1 per cent an island.

The results comes amid "phenomenal" interest in tomorrow's draw, for the biggest prize in Lotto history.

Lotto NZ chief executive Wayne Pickup said there were queues in Lotto outlets this morning.

"Four times as many tickets [are] being sold every hour than the same time last week," said Pickup.

Lotto had to deliver more ticket paper to all outlets to ensure they didn't run out, he said.
