Cyclist finds cycleways too dangerous

The recent article regarding cyclists' safety risks at Welcome Bay is similar to the Chapel St situation where motorists travelling to the Mount cut across a designated cycle lane which cyclists use to travel directly into the city or turn left to Sulphur Point via the traffic lights.

As a regular cyclist travelling into town most days, there is no way that I would again use the coloured cycleway due to having experienced motorists blasting their horn to make road room for them to head to the Mount.

I will no longer take a risk of being rear-ended by traffic travelling to the Mount. The safer alternative is to walk my cycle along the pedestrian footpath on the opposite side of the road and ensure staying in one piece.

Opposition to council spend up on nice-to-haves

We are strongly opposed to councils grabbing control over community issues, currently being performed by democratically elected community boards.

They should instead concentrate on holding our rates to a reasonable level, instead of squandering money on new nice to haves, eg. Katikati's new town centre/library.
