Raising awareness of the legend of Mauao
I write to say that, like John Davies (News, July 12), I have met up with literally hundreds of domestic and overseas hikers at the summit of Mauao, and an increasing number from the summer cruise liners. Many regulars are constantly pointing out various
places to visitors who show a sincere interest in the history of Mauao and its surrounds.
While I understand the comments from Shane Ashby, I would like to suggest that a low profile compass with a plaque detailing the legend of Mauao would only enhance people's awareness of the significance of this sacred place to Maori.
I would like Cr Wayne Moultrie to understand that almost all hikers love and respect Mauao, and do not wish to see any commercialisation.
Roger Mabbett, Bethlehem
