The jury in an Ōpōtiki murder trial has been sent home for the night after retiring this afternoon.
The jury retired to consider their verdict at 1.10pm today after hearing five days of evidence and Justice Kit Toogood's summing up of the Crown and defence cases.
Justice Toogood sent the jury home at 5pm and deliberations will resume tomorrow.
Harry Clements Matchitt, 52, is on trial in the Tauranga High Court, accused of murdering 77-year-old Brian Albert Hilton in July 2016.
The Crown alleges a "drunk and angry " Matchitt brutally assaulted Hilton at his Ford Street, Ōpōtiki home on the evening of July 7, 2016.
