When the Bay of Plenty Times hit the streets of Tauranga today for reaction on Mr Key's shock resignation, many people had not heard the news.
Those who had were shocked at the decision and concerned about who would replace him.
Katikati resident Stephanie said the resignation was a surprise but thought Mr Key was probably looking for a new challenge.
"He has probably achieved what he can and he is leaving the country in a good position. New Zealand is good economically, he's done a lot on the world stage and met important people.
"He's worked very hard for New Zealand," she said.
Lakshman Wirasinha was shocked to learn of the Prime Minister's announcement. "I was listening to him ... on the radio this morning and there was no mention of any of this."
Papamoa resident Jenny Coventry said she was in absolute shock.
"I really think he is wonderful and has done a fantastic job in leading New Zealand.
Mrs Coventry was unsure Deputy Prime Minister Bill English, who had Mr Key's backing, was the right person for the top job.
Jordan Lemn was also unsure whether Mr English would make a good prime minister.
Mr Key's decision to resign was "fair enough", he said.
Susan West said she was really shocked.
"I am really shocked. Politically I feel really ignorant because I have no idea what is happening. There must be a lot more to what is happening than we know.
"I have no idea who would step up and take over his role," she said. Oropi resident Lorraine Hayman said his decision was made at a very odd time.
"There was no warning or anything. The scariest part of this whole thing will be, who steps up to take his position?"
Ohauiti resident Wade Green said Mr Key's decision to step down was disappointing.
"I thought he has done well in the time he has been Prime Minister.
"I thought he would have lasted at least until end of term. It's quite surprising. I'm not sure who a good replacement would be."
