Homes were evacuated in Te Puke this afternoon after a gas main was ruptured.

A Northern Fire Communications spokeswoman said the incident happened on Princess St at 11.40am.

The spokeswoman said houses in the area were evacuated while workmen on site waited for the gas company to arrive to have the gas main sealed.

Three fire trucks from Te Puke and Mount Maunganui were called to the incident.
