Emergency services were called to a house in Mount Maunganui earlier today after a pot of cooking oil caught on fire.
Mount Maunganui Fire Station station officer Lindsay Nicol said a small fire started just before 12pm in the kitchen in the Mount Mount Maunganui Rd three-bedroom home after a resident of the house left the pot of oil unattended for a short time.
"The fire was contained to the stove and fridge. It started on the stove top, traveled up the wall across the ceiling and back down onto the fridge," he said.
Mr Nicol said the quick actions of a call to emergency services meant the fire only took a couple of minutes to extinguish.
"No doubt in three or four minutes it would have been a much larger fire."
