A man who drove from Auckland to Tauranga today was so high on drugs he hardly remembered any of the trip.
That's the allegation from police who say the 19-year-old Waihi man effectively drove on "auto pilot" after allegedly taking methamphetamine.
The man does not remember almost crashing at Maungatawhiri on State Highway 2 or dropping a passenger in Ngatea, Senior Sergeant Ross Bielby said.
Mr Bielby said the man was surprised to hear that Tauranga was in fact where he was when he arrived shortly after 6am.
Police were alerted after being phoned about the man's erratic behaviour outside a Tauranga home.
A doctor confirmed he was incapable of proper control of a vehicle due to the influence of drugs. The man allegedly told police he had smoked the drug so he could stay awake while driving to Tauranga to visit his girlfriend and child.
He was to appear in Tauranga District Court today.
