Tauranga hosted the the National Youth Jazz Competition over the weekend, with the first time an all-female combo has entered in the 39 years the competition has been running.
Murray Mason, musical director of Tauranga Girls' College band Sextet Pistols, said he thought there were a lot more combos this year, "I'm really, really enjoying it," he said.
Sextet Pistols bass player Lizzie Kulasingham, 17, said she did not realise it was the first time an all-female combo had entered this competition.
"It's pretty cool. We think we did well once we got into it."
The name Sextet Pistols is a play on the six-piece combo group being called a sextet, combined with the idea of the Sex Pistols.
