Gang patch ban and $2000 fine proposed for Tauranga suburbs

Gang members could be fined $2000 for wearing patches in Tauranga suburbs under a policy proposed by city councillor Clayton Mitchell.

Tauranga City Council staff are reviewing a number of policies, with elected members this week voting to create new rules around gambling, mobile shops, public art and the sale of legal highs over the coming months.

TCC will also investigate the need for a by-law dictating where gang patches can be worn after a proposal from Cr Mitchell who praised Wanganui District Council's patch ban. The local rule gives police powers to fine patch-wearers $2000 and take possession of the insignia.

Cr Mitchell told the Bay of Plenty Times council would start talks with police to see if there was a need for something similar in Tauranga.

"We always talk about having a vibrant city going forward but when I walk around some suburbs, when you get out in places like Greerton, you see little old ladies intimidated by patched up gang members while they are trying to shop," he said.

"I was out there recently and there were these gang members taking up the whole footpath and these older women were too scared to go past."

Mayor Stuart Crosby has questioned the move, saying he did not think it was needed and "could damage the reputation of the city" but Tauranga police have welcomed the proposal.
