I can vividly remember my first school principal.
Jack Stevens was head of Silverdale Normal Primary in Hamilton and had white hair, wore three-piece suits and carried a large leather brief case.
I remember him as tough but fair. He laid down the law when necessary (he never tolerated fighting in the schoolgrounds) and he was a man we respected.
If my memory serves me correctly, he left Silverdale around 1982 - and certainly left a void in the school community.
No doubt it will be the same at Pillans Point School after its retiring principal of 17 years, Ian Fletcher, was to be farewelled today.
A celebration of Mr Fletcher's contribution was planned with staff, parents, students and special guests gathering to mark the occasion.
When it comes to principals and teachers, I have always found it amazing how one person can make such a difference to people's lives and even change the shape of their future.
No doubt it's the same with Mr Fletcher. His story is on page 5 and we wish him all the best in his retirement.
