I've lost count of how many times I have seen the sobering images on television of kids in overseas countries not having enough to eat or living in squalor without proper education.
These poor children hardly stand a chance.
But some do, thanks to kind-hearted people like Denise Arnold.
The Tauranga woman formed Cambodia Charitable Trust in 2008 - an organisation that sponsors 133 students in eight schools in rural Cambodia. She has won many accolades for her work.
This amazing woman is today's Community Gem.
Our community gems are people who serve and help others, either in our own community or elsewhere.
I have no doubt there are plenty of other people out there just like Denise.
