What on earth possesses someone to balance high in the air and risk their life?

At some stage in life most of us grow up and become mature adults with regard for ourselves and others.

But clearly not everyone makes this transition.

A new craze called "planking", which has featured in mainstream media over the past day, is a good example of adults who really are still behaving like children.

On page A4 in the

Bay of Plenty Times

today, we carry the story of how a 20-year-old Australian man died while planking on a narrow balcony railing before plummeting several stories.

Planking is where a person is photographed lying flat and face down in a precarious and novel spot. The images are then posted on social media sites, such as Facebook.

The craze began about four years ago in Europe and is now in Aussie. Police say it hasn't arrived here yet - and let's hope it never does.

For starters this is a waste of time and rather immature. Stupid in fact.

At its worst it is clearly deadly.

What on earth possesses someone to balance high in the air and risk their life like this?

Fun? They've got be kidding. Grown-up? Most certainly not. Ridiculous? Yes.
