Earthworks aimed at controlling stormwater and reducing the effects of flooding near the Tauranga Historic Village are set to begin next week.

Work will take place between the north-western ends of 16th Ave and 17th Ave from early next week and continue through until late April.

Tauranga City Council said contractors may have to restrict access to a section of cycleway/walkway at times for safety reasons.

The nearby skate park and the main section of cycleway, running from 17th Ave along Takitimu Drive, were expected to remain open

The council said the aim of the project was to raise the existing earth bunds to prevent excess flooding in the surrounding areas.
