Fewer Bay families have received assistance from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority to pay their children's school examination fees, surprising Tauranga principals.

It costs $76.70 per year for a student to sit their NCEA exams, but no more than $200 per family for multiple children sitting their exams.

Parents or caregivers paying the fees can apply for financial assistance if they fit certain criteria such as having a Community Services Card.

Dave Randell, principal of Otumoetai College, said he was surprised approved applications for financial assistance had decreased in the past three years.

"We talk about the tough times and people not being able to afford it. People who have a community services card can get a discount.

"What does worry me is there are a number of parents who still haven't paid."

Tauranga Girls' College principal Pauline Cowens said it was surprising there were fewer people qualifying for financial assistance.

"I think any subsidy that is given for things that are essential in life such as getting an education and improving learning is great."
