As Tauranga pilot John Borman was buried on Saturday, a banner fluttering across the sky said it all: "We will miss you John".
Mr Borman, aged 60, was an experienced and popular pilot who died after his home-built, amphibious plane crashed during take-off on Lake Taupo on Sunday 16.
As about 700 family, friends and members of the flying fraternity gathered to farewell Mr Borman on Saturday at Pyes Pa.
The overhead message was organised by the Tauranga Aero Club and flown across the sky by Bay Flight Banners.
A flying display involving four planes was also held above Tauranga Airport later in the day as people gathered after the funeral.
Mr Borman's wife Noeleen was in the Seawind 3000 plane when it crashed but escaped with minor injuries to her face.
An investigation has been launched by the Civil Aviation Authority and the plane is now being examined in a hangar in Tauranga.
