The Bay of Plenty District Health Board will receive more than $550,000 in extra funding to boost the number of elective surgeries.
The money will be used for operations in ophthalmology and plastics and means 100 Bay people will receive elective surgery in the next five months.
Health Minister TonyRyall said: "This government has lifted the number of Bay of Plenty patients receiving elective surgery from 6257 in 2007/08 to 8989 last year".
"This has been a huge increase of 2732 people - but we want even more Bay of Plenty patients to benefit from surgery," said Mr Ryall.
"Elective surgery makes a real difference to patients and their families - it reduces pain, increases independence and improves their quality of life.
"We have identified specialties where public hospitals can do even better and every district health board will receive extra funding to provide even more patients with the surgery they need."
