The charges stemmed from a prolonged assault on September 20 this year.
About 7.15pm that day, Thompson was at the Greerton shopping centre with the victim, who had driven him there.
The victim had formerly been in a brief relationship with Thompson, but they had remained friends, the police summary of facts revealed.
Thompson then asked her to drive him to Jones St and, shortly after arriving, he asked the woman to drive him to Arataki. He became angry when she asked why.
He removed the keys from the ignition and tried to push the victim out of her vehicle.
Thompson then put both of his hands around the victim's throat and strangled her so she was unable to breathe, then climbed over her and hopped out the driver's door.
He then tried to drag the woman out of the car by her hair, but she held on to the steering wheel. Thompson stopped the assault when a member of the public intervened.
Thompson then drove off at excessive speed, telling the victim seated beside him that he was going to "kill them both".
When the woman attempted to jump from the vehicle, he grabbed her by her hair and pulled her head into his lap, leaving her feet dangling out the open door.
After shutting the door he sped off, turning into Oban St, then back towards Cameron Rd, where the victim again tried to escape.
Thompson once again grabbed her hair and pulled her head into his lap.
Struggling, she managed to escape, running towards a nearby church screaming for help. Thompson chased her and again dragged her by her hair towards the car.
Thompson then picked her up and, as he was carrying her back to the car, she grabbed a signpost. He again dragged her away by her hair.
Thompson then threw the woman on the road and, as she screamed out for help, he used her jersey to cover her mouth.
Another passing motorist stopped to intervene and Thompson drove off in the victim's vehicle, which had her house keys, garage door remote and wallet inside.
A few days later, he returned her vehicle and belongings, leaving them on the side of the road near her house. He text messaged her to tell her where to find them.
The victim had a painful scalp, bruising on her right arm, pain and redness on her right shoulder, and scratches and redness on her throat as a result of the assault.
Thompson told police he had been under a lot of stress and became angry.
Judge Stephen Coyle remanded Thompson in custody for sentencing on January 31.
