Editorial: It'll be hot before you know it

Well, good old Mother Nature. She has given us a real show of her awesome power.

Only three months ago, the country was declared a drought zone.

Our poor farmers struggled with the lack of water and feed for their stock, while homeowners throughout the region watched as their once green lawn turned brown and people sweltered through the long hot nights.

Fast forward three months and we've had floods in the South Island and most of the country has experienced a polar blast.

Now, instead of kicking the blankets off at night, there is a rush to grab the spare blanket from the wardrobe.

Crowded House's song - Four Seasons in One Day - sums up our country perfectly.

There are not too many places in the world where on any given day you can experience the weather from one extreme to another.

Mornings can start off looking like a day to hang out the washing to all of a sudden rushing out to the line to grab near dry clothes from a sudden burst of showers.

It's also meant the return of the dreaded flu and, of course, as the days get shorter and the temperature drops it's not uncommon for the winter blues to set in.

When all you want to do is to curl into a ball and do nothing but eat. It can all be a little depressing really.

The next few days promise no ease up on the cold snap.

I know I've struggled these last couple of days to get myself out of bed and personally I have always preferred the summer.

Never mind, I'm looking forward to what Mother Nature has in store for us in another three months' time.
