Congratulations to the Maketu sisters Karena and Kasey Bird.

Congratulations to the Maketu sisters Karena and Kasey Bird.

I'd like to think of myself as a good cook.

I have spent several evenings and weekends whipping up a storm in my kitchen with grand ideas and aspirations of restaurant-quality food.

However, the end result is rarely what I had hoped for and I get grumpy and frustrated.

Only if I am not completely ashamed of my efforts, do I bring it in to the office and share with my colleagues.

I would never last in a competitive cooking environment, which is why I have to take my hat off to Maketu sisters Karena and Kasey Bird.

On Sunday the sisters were announced the winners of this year's MasterChef competition.

This was the first time the New Zealand show has been a couples version and I would shudder to think what I would have been like if I had entered with my mother or sister. As well as we get on, the gloves would be off if they did something wrong, I just don't think I would have been able to help myself.

There would be plenty of tears and I'm sure there would be long periods of silence between us.

I'm sure it wouldn't make for good TV.

Thankfully the Maketu sisters managed to hold it together throughout what would have been a stressful series.

When you enter a reality show like this your skills and abilities are constantly being scrutinised and judged and you would always be comparing yourself to those around you.

When the sisters were announced as the winners Karena said she couldn't believe it.

"It's just been such a long journey, but it's all been worth it. I'm so proud of Kasey and the fact we got to do it together. It's the best feeling I've ever had in my life," she said.

Their $100,000 prize package includes two Skoda Rapid Spaceback cars, $15,000 worth of appliances from Fisher and Paykel, $5000 in kitchenware, $15,000 worth of groceries from Countdown and an exclusive MasterChef cookbook deal.

I wish these sisters the best of luck, they were the clear favourites from the start of the show and proved they had what it takes to become the winners.

I look forward to hearing about them in the future.
