A mixed commercial and apartment development up to three storeys high has been proposed for a prime Papamoa Beach Rd site next to the Papamoa shops.
Developer Graham Rodgers wants to transform the 7350 sq m block of bare land on the corner of Papamoa Beach Rd and Domain Rd.
Representatives of Mr Rodgers told Tauranga City councillors today that a mixed-use development that featured a retail frontage curving around the corner was the best design solution and would provide an energetic hub for Papamoa.
The main building would be a mix of shops, offices and apartments, with a broad public promenade reminiscent of the shops under Mount Maunganui's Twin Towers. Inside the site surrounding a carpark would be stand-alone apartments and townhouses.
Consultant architect Rob Benge told councillors that they were looking for a positive response from the meeting to "facilitate the decision making process", saying the project ticked all the council's urban design boxes.
