Motorists are experiencing delays along State Highway 2 between Katikati and Tauranga after a truck caught fire this morning.

Police were called to the scene near Aongatete Rd at 5.23am after reports of a truck fire.

A police media spokeswoman said it was not clear how the fire started and there were no reports of any injuries.

"There doesn't seem to have been any crash prior to the fire," the spokeswoman said.

Traffic is moving as one lane was opened in each direction at 6.37am.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said three fire appliances attended the incident but the cause of the fire was still unknown.

Officers from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Team will be inspecting the truck once it's been moved to a local garage.
