He's famous for running on a golden sand beach, so David Hasselhoff shouldn't have any problem adapting to Mount Maunganui's Main Beach.
The international celebrity who inspired the saying "don't hassle the Hoff" is heading to the Bay as part of an endorsement deal for a new ice-block.
Hasselhoff, best known for his roles in Baywatch and Knight Rider, is sure to cause a stir among beach-goers when he comes to town on January 6.
The Hoff posted news of his trip on Twitter, writing: "Exciting news ... Hoff To Australia very soon!!! DH x." He added: "I may also be coming to New Zealand ..."
The Herald On Sunday reported he is understood to have been paid a substantial fee for the trip Down Under by Streets Ice Cream, which is launching a new range of ice blocks called Splice Real Fruits.
The Bay of Plenty Times understands the Mount Maunganui Surf Life Saving Club has been paid a fee to host Hasselhoff, and will offer uniformed lifeguards as security. The club plans to take advantage of the 3000-strong crowd expected by fundraising with a bucket collection.
Since appearing on TV screens playing Michael Knight in the cult 1980s classic Knight Rider, Hasselhoff has been a figure of both adulation and ridicule - and he has embraced them both.
He played lifeguard Mitch Buchannon in the 1990s phenomenon Baywatch, has a cult following in Germany for his pop career, and has appeared in pantomimes in London.
But in 2007 his daughter posted a YouTube clip showing a drunken Hasselhoff eating a cheeseburger off his kitchen floor. In true Hoff fashion, he bounced back to host America's Got Talent.
