The daughter of a man jailed for indecently assaulting a young girl mouthed the words "I hate you" as he stood in the dock learning his fate.
Whangarei's Rex Adams, 57, faced sentencing on two charges of indecent assault on a female under 12 and one of an indecent act on a girl under 12 when he appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday. He had earlier been found guilty.
From the public gallery Adams' daughter, flanked by his sister and a family friend, watched as the truck driver was sentenced to 20 months' jail.
Adams appeared indifferent in the dock as Judge Christopher Harding explained how Adams breached the trust of the victim's parents.
The judge told the court how Adams had offered to babysit the girl and, while doing so, removed her underwear, indecently assaulted her and told her not to tell anyone about it.
