The great thing about competition is that it makes businesses work that much harder to please customers.
A great example is today's article about a sushi bar war which has broken out in the central city.
A new sushi bar, Tauranga Sushi House, has opened at the top end of Devonport Rd, three doors down from Sushi Ltd, which has been there for more than a decade.
There are two other sushi bars on the same road.
The Japanese food has become popular over the past few years with many of the bars in Tauranga often packed at lunchtime.
Sushi is regarded as a more healthy alternative to many other types of ready-to-eat food.
On one hand, it could be argued that two sushi bars close to each other is overkill. Who would set up next to an existing business?
The new guy on the block is confident he has the best sushi and welcomes the competition. Sushi Ltd believes there are too many shops now.
Time will tell if there are enough customers to satisfy four such bars in town.
But one thing is clear - it can only be good for customers.
They should be the winners in terms of quality, service and price.
