National Jazz Fest Opening at Tauranga Baycourt. Jackie Ryan

National Jazz Fest Opening at Tauranga Baycourt. Jackie Ryan

US singer Jackie Ryan's powerful voice filled Baycourt Theatre last night during the official
launch of the 52nd National Jazz Festival.

Supported by the Phil Broadhurst Quartet, the performer belted out everything from blues
and gospel flavoured jazz numbers to love songs during the gala event.

Deputy mayor Kelvin Clout officially launched the festival, calling it Tauranga's "flagship event'' which "added vibrancy and excitement to the city.

"This festival contributes to the life of the city,'' he said.

Tauranga Jazz Society president Darryl Haigh praised the team behind the events hard work and dedication which he said had resulted in a festival that was "exciting, punchy
and affordable.''

Mr Haigh urged the crowd not miss a "single opportunity'' to see the line up of international and national artists who will play over the five day event.

"The artists we have this year are simply fantastic,'' he said.

"They are some of the best in the world so make sure you see as many as you can, don't miss a single opportunity.''
