Otumoetai Intermediate are off on a journey they will remember forever when they play in the New Zealand Post Cup National Finals at the New Zealand Cricket High Performance Centre at Lincoln University in Canterbury from today through to Wednesday.
The New Zealand Post Cup and Shield are national competitions for primary school boys (cup) and girls (shield) that have been played since 2000.
The six finalists at New Zealand Post Cup and Shield represent each of the six New Zealand Cricket Major Associations in the country.
Otumoetai Intermediate finished second to Tauranga Intermediate in Bay of Plenty pool play in term one, which qualified them for the Northern Districts finals in Pukekohe. After being gifted a bye in the opening round, Otumoetai beat Fairfield Intermediate in convincing fashion. Next up, was a tough battle with Morrinsville, with the side posting 108 then bowling the Waikato side out to claim victory. The Morrinsville win put Otumoetai at the top of their pool and pitted them against arch-rivals Tauranga Intermediate in the final.
Tauranga Intermediate batted first and some tight Otumoetai bowling saw Tauranga removed for 95. Otumoetai went about the run chase in a professional manner and were rewarded with the win with only two wickets down and two overs to spare. Tight line and length bowling from Ryan Gilbertson, Logan Baker and Matt James played a big part in the Otumoetai victory.
