Tauranga's Daniel Flynn scored 157 out of a record opening partnership with Henry Cooper (136) of 278 for Northern Districts against Canterbury at Cobham Oval in Whangarei on Sunday.
The opening partnership was the highest first wicket for Northern Districts against any first class association, beating the previous best of 274 set by BJ Watling and Brad Wilson against Wellington in 2010-11 season.
Fellow Bay of Plenty batsman Bharat Popli returned to form with 65 not out as Northern Districts declared at 409/4 against Canterbury.
It was 32-year-old Flynn's 21st first class century and 20th for Northern Districts — the most by any batsman. He has now scored 7424 runs at first class level with 21 centuries and 28 half-centuries at an average of 37.12.
Flynn played 24 tests, 20 ODIs and five Twenty20 internationals for New Zealand between 2008 and 2013.
