Crash victims still recovering in hospital

The two people seriously hurt in a crash at Welcome Bay last night are still recovering in Tauranga Hospital this afternoon.

A 19-year-old woman remains in a 'serious but stable' condition, a hospital spokesman said.

A 17-year-old woman remains 'stable'.

The pair had been travelling in a car which crash through a fence off Welcome Bay Rd last night and took out five power poles about 7.10pm.

Police Senior Sergeant Chris Summerville said four other people in the car walked away with minor injuries.

Mr Summerville appealed for witnesses or people with information to contact police who believe another vehicle was involved in the crash which he said was speed related.

The crash happened near the Waitao Rd turn-off.

A rescue team from the Te Puke Fire Brigade had to cut one person out of the car.
