A 20-year-old Tauranga man injured in a car crash on State Highway 2 at Whakamarama last night has recovered to be in a stable condition in Tauranga Hospital.

The man, who was the passenger in the two-occupant car, was admitted in a critical condition following the crash attended by the Omokoroa Fire Brigade at 11.40pm.

Omokoroa's deputy chief fire officer Simon Priest said it was a single vehicle crash near the intersection of SH2 and Te Karaka Drive.

Police and St John Ambulance were at the scene when they arrived.

Brigade volunteers spent over an hour directing traffic past the accident scene and cleaning up the crash site.
