Boaties rejoiced as New Zealand moved into alert level 2 and they were able to hit the open water but Water Safety Bay of Plenty is urging them to be prepared before heading out.
"Vessels have been sitting idle for the past six weeks so it's important boaties do a quick check to ensure nothing is damaged, including lifejackets," Bay of Plenty regional water safety manager Dave White said.
"A lot of boaties are using auto-inflating lifejackets that require a CO2 cartridge which can corrode if left in the jacket for too long, ultimately rendering the jacket useless."
Life jackets must also be worn at all times in the Bay of Plenty, unless the skipper has assessed the risks and advised that it's safe to remove them and must be worn when crossing a bar.
"A quick check of all your gear is all it takes to keep you and your family safe," White said.
